I think the one thing Basco actually likes about Joe's personality is that there's ease and predictability when it comes to Joe. For a pirate with serious trust issues, it's actually not that bad to talk to him and know exactly what is going to happen, where he stands and not need to think of a plan B in case something sneaks up and attacks.
